pro jobseeking tip: never answer these surveys honestly

also a tip: if they have a question like “Everybody steals from work sometimes” answer “disagree.” I found this out when i was working as a hiring manager and the company i worked for started instituting these tests for managerial hires or promotions. My boss and I were promoting someone and she failed the test because she answered that question as “slightly agree” which in the results tells them that she is someone likely to steal because she believes everyone does it. When we asked her about her answer, it turns out she picked what she did because she’s cynical and does assume that people steal but didnt agree with them doing so. she almost sued the company for not promoting her based on that but chose to leave instead. We lost a good employee because corporate decided these tests were a good way to screen for “good” employees.tldr these things are poorly designed, ambiguously worded, and structured in ways that are designed to eliminate people because the intention of the questions is never made clear. these tests are evil.

this sounds like an ableist disaster for people who aren’t neurotypical and who struggle with reading signals 

 When I went to get diagnosed with ADHD, the neuropsychologist couldn’t figure out what was going on, because on paper I’m apparently floridly psychotic.  No, the questions are imprecise, and I am hyper-literal and extremely honest.  
“Do you often see things that other people do not see?”  Yes. 
     The question I was answering:  “Are you especially observant?”
     The question the test was actually asking:  “Are you having visual hallucinations?” 
“Does your environment ever have special messages for you?”  Yes.  
     The question I was answering:  “Does the sudden sight of a rainbow during a    bout of doubt and self-loathing make you feel as though the world is trying to cheer you up?”
      The question the test was actually asking:  “Do you believe that your toaster is trying to convince you that the neighbors are spying on you?”
Five years later, I bombed a psych eval for a park ranger job for the same sort of thing.  Tread carefully, darlings.  

^^^^ that is actually such a huge issue with diagnosis!!!! and I’ve thought I didn’t experience symptoms for ages that I actually clearly had all along because of things being phrased super weirdly and confusingly :(

Yeah, this is why this kind of thing in job apps needs to be illegal. A lot of discrimination is well hidden.

Oh!  That explains why even having friends and my then-husband proofread these every time didn’t even work.  They may not be as weird as me, but they’re not neurotypical.  We all read the questions tantefledermaus mentioned as observational skills!

My sister said to answer these as if you were a really passive person who relied on management/authority to tell you exactly what to do/think. 

Protip: my Dad is a hiring manager at Home Depot and he told me the system they use (with the stupidass pointless 500 question quiz) is designed so it filters out people with neutral answers. Several months ago I applied for numerous jobs, each of which required their own dumbass tests. To save time (and my sanity) i would click the “sometimes” or middle option for nearly every question unless it was serious. Nobody every called me back. Hell only 1 of the 8 places i applied to even messaged me back saying “thank you but we have gone with someone else”. Your applications wont even get seen unless you “pass” the quiz. 
So when all yall do fill out these dumb things be sure to pick strong yes or no answers. Never “maybe” or “slighty agree/disagree”

Thank you for that, cause I do that a lot. Like I legit feel neutral on some of those questions. Tumblr with the life hacks

 I've seen a lot of videos going around of urban-dwelling critters coming to
 humans for help with various problems, ranging from boxes stuck on their heads
 to young trapped down a storm drain, and it's gotten me to thinking
 On the one hand, it's kind of fascinating that they know to do that.
 On the other hand, setting any questions of how this sort of behaviour must have
 arisen aside for the nonce, does it ever strike you how weird it is that we've got
 a whole collection of prey species whose basic problem-solving script ends with
 the step "if all else fails, go bother one of the local apex predators and maybe
 they'll fix the problem for no reason"?

 well, come to think of it, we're at the top of the food chain but we almost
 exclusively hunt and kill prey out in the country
 raccoons and possums and foxes and crows all succeed in an urban
 environment because they're opportunistic and observant. and almost none of
 them would have observed us pounce on one of their species and then start
 eating it, you know? a lot of them would have observed that we scream and
 chase them out of wherever we don't want them to be, but other animals are
 territorial too. but there's a number of situations where humans feed whoever's
 bold enough to take them up on the offer, and we do tend to pull garbage off of
 other animals as soon as they slow down enough for us to catch. 'a human got
 me but nothing bad happened' is a much more frequent thing than 'a human got
 me and tried to eat me
 anyway like, we're masters of our environment, we make weird shit happen all
 the time, we have lots of great food and sometimes we share, and we almost
 never eat someone. it makes sense for urban animals, over the last century or
 so, to just keep an eye out for opportunities to use us, and to pass the habit on
 to their kids.

 It really is a weird, funny thing. Like yeah, technically they're predators, and they
 get pretty screamy, especially if you try to take any of their stuff... but given the
 chance it seems like they'd rather help us out and sometimes they'll just
 randomly give you food, so???
 I mean, I guess in fairytales and myths we've got our fair share of stories about
 dangerous people/creatures who might well kill you or otherwise ruin your life
 but to whom people nonetheless turn for help in desperate circumstances. So
 it's not like the perspective is exactly a foreign thing to our own mindset, really
 It's just that, y'know, we can't actually go make a deal with the faeries when
 there's something we can't figure out
 Which brings me to an interesting thought about the ubiquitous rule about never
 eating the faery food lest you find yourself forever unsatisfied with anything in
 the human world- and the potential parallels to the dangers of feeding wildlife
 human food lest they become addicted and too tame and dependent to be safe
 for either themselves or us. Hmm.)

 Okay, but that last bit with the Fae... makes almost perfect sense
 Of the stories I've read, the food of the Fae, its origins and effects, are often
 strange and/or obscure- Just like our food to most animals.
 The Fae are strange beings that seem to know weird things that give them
 power or an edge over us.- Just like us to animals.
 The Fae work and live by strange rules also ofen nonsensical or obscure to us
 Just like us to animals.
 The Fae can easily obtain vast amounts of things we consider
 rare/precious/desireable, and have no problem with dishing it out wantonly for no
 other reason than amusement.- Just like us to animals.
 The Fae sometimes are amused by having us around, but only on their terms
 and IF it amuses/intrigues them.- Just like us to animals.
 GUYS, I SENSE A PATTERN....
 -they have arcane social conventions and the punishment for not paying the
 correct respects right is banishment, if you're lucky, and death if you're not
 -they have wild and unexpected parties where you'd least expect to find them,
 but if you're bold enough to entertain them they'll feed you and caress you and
 play with you all night
 time runs strangely in their realm. their homes are summeriands: warm and
 bright, no matter the season. there is always fruit on their tables. but not
 everyone who comes in from the cold is let back out again.
 -their games are cruel and complex and unfair, but if you can beat them by their
 own rules you will access riches beyond imagining.
 sometimes they just fucking fuck with you, the fuckheads
 -they will absolutely steal your children away. when your children return-if they
 ever do-they will come back strange. they will know things they shouldn't. they
 won't know things that they should. your strange children might survive, might
 even prosper, might take wives and husbands and have children of their own
 but they will always be marked by their time away from your world.
 the price for pissing them off is always death. sometimes just you. sometimes
 your whole community
 if you are very good, and very smart, and very brave, they will grant your wish.

 cheated and got different seeds and planted them. The little
 girl didn't cheat and was not able to grow anything because
 the seed was dead. She was the only one who didn't cheat.

 i get the moral it's trying to convey but that king is an idiot and the
 kingdom's doomed. you don't appoint an honest kid who will forthrightly
 admit a failure like that to leadership of a country, you put that kid in
 charge of like... the army, or something. the department of agriculture
 i'd send out dead seeds, then appoint the kid with the biggest and most
 beautiful plant anyway. ideally the same kind of plant as the dead
 seeds were from. and ideally a kid with a really good pokerface. that kid
 knows
 a) how to perceive failure early (a well developed second plant means
 they knew how soon the first seeds should sprout and didn't fuck
 around when they didn't)
 b) how to fix the situation (a second plant of the same species means
 they got someone to help them identify the seeds and plant more, or
 are observant enough to do it themselves)
 c) how to get the best people for a job in to do it (kids aren't great
 gardeners. a beautiful science project probably means mom did all the
 work-just what you want from a child ruler and their regent)
 all around, that kid (or their mom) is the kind of devious results-oriented
 bald-faced liar you want to go toe-to-toe with the lords of your country
 and the rulers of your neighbors. not a little kid who admits defeat so
 early and in a situation with such high stakes. whoops i didn't grow a
 plant' sounds a lot less sweet when you phrase it like 'i give up on
