 When my mom found out I was having sex I thought she'd
 beat the hell out of me
 She took me for breakfast, asked a few questions and took
 me to see a gynecologist. I was rx'd birth control. When we
 got home she told me she was disappointed that I didn't
 wait, but she wanted me to be safe. We talked about
 condoms and she showed me a Nike box full of condoms she
 kept at the top of the living room closet for my brothers. She
 also told my high school boyfriend's mother. She quickly
 cleared up that "your daughter is fast" bullshit and let her
 know she needed to talk to her son about safer sex.
 She was hurt, upset and surprised, but she did not punish
 me. She also said "don't lay there just to please a man, learn
 your body." She took me to the gyn once a year and kept me
 on her insurance through college so I could have access to
 birth control
 My mom was a strict as they come but she knew better than
 to shame me for doing what humans do. I mean, she was on
 my ass like a hawk, and cock blocked like no one's business,
 but she didn't punish me for having sex. People talked mad
 shit about my mom because of it.
 Stop beating your daughters for fucking. It isn't a deterrent.
 It isn't a barrier. They will find a way to do what they want to
 The only thing you're doing is making sure they go through
 life feeling shame around their sexuality. I have told way too
 many kids and adults that they are HIV positive who were
 confused about how it happened
 Talk to your kids openly and honestly about sex. Spend more
 time talking to them and less time beating and humiliating
 them in front of an audience.

 Only one man in history
 has been cured of HIV
Despite advances in the treatment of HIV infection, there is actually still no cure for the disease. As strange as this might sound, a certain man named Timothy Ray Brown was medically "cured" of HIV in 2008. So how did this happen? Timothy Ray Brown had been on anti-retroviral drugs to suppress HIV for 11 years, until he was diagnosed with leukemia (a cancer of white blood cells) . After a failed attempt at chemotherapy, his doctors decided to give him a stem cell transplant to treat his cancer. The donor in this stem cell transplant had a genetic mutation that prevented HIV from gaining entry into his cells (actually less than 1% of the world's population is resistant to HIV infection because of this mutation). After the transplant, his body produced cells that were resistant to infection by HIV. In the end, he became both HIV and cancer free! The question that might come to mind is why this method hasn't been carried out on the millions of people who live with HIV globally. The answer lies in practicability- transplants are complex procedures that need excellent donor-recipient matches and involve the use of immuno-suppressant medication (drugs that decrease a person's immunity). It would be impractical to apply this method on a large scale. This kind of transplant was also performed on two HIV positive patients in Boston. The procedure was not successful in curing the HIV infection- although the patients were transplanted with cells that were not resistant to HIV. Up till date, Timothy Ray Brown is the only man in history that has been cured from HIV. Look at this photo for a minute.

Set aside your political leaning or any complaint you have about the choices that various governments in Canada have made lately, and just look at this photo. It’s nearly impossible to imagine it being taken in any other country. Really look at it, because it was iconic the moment it was shot.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Canada’s current prime minister would make an appearance in Toronto at one of the largest gay pride parades in the world - maybe he could have dressed in a natty suit and his signature tan lace-ups, and waved to the crowd while waving the flag. That alone would have been enough to make history, to feed the news cycle and to build the Justin™ brand. Maybe even snag another GQ cover.

But, no. Appreciate what is happening in this photo. This G7 leader decided to bare his hairless chest in a salmon-pink shirt, and slip into curvy white jeans (there isn’t a straight guy alive that can pull off white jeans without irony - don’t even bother disagreeing with me), and shake his baby-maker under a high, July sun while being hosed down by a hundred water pistols wielded by all manner of race and colour along the straight, L, G, B, T, and Q spectrum. And in this picture, you can just make out the guy in the hat to the right of Trudeau’s jubilant armpit. He’s a recent émigré to Canada. A 5-foot-1, gay, HIV-positive Syrian refugee, which, if you look it up, is the definition of completely fucked back in his devastated homeland. And yet, there he is, marching and dancing next to the leader of his newly-adopted country, agog in the middle of Yonge Street.

Some might say that this is simply a picture of liberalism gone wild, or of biblical deviance, or of political opportunism. Go ahead – knock yourself out. Or, you would be partially correct to see this as a photo of a minority group celebrating a wider acceptance of its claim to humanity. It is that, and a great deal more. To look at this photo and not grasp its significance is to not only succumb to shallow, jaded and isolated thinking, but also to take for granted a level of freedom that is absurdly great in comparison to the utter bleakness in other corners of the world right now. This is a photo that says, “You have the freedom to not only feel love here, but to demonstrate it, celebrate it, sing it and shine it. Don’t squander it.”
