This genre follows the aesthetics and technology of Western civilization during the mid to late middle ages, though sometimes it’s set in the Victorian era.

Cyberpunk: Has advanced technology and often focuses on artificial intelligence and the cyber world. The setting is often near-future rather than far-future. Blade Runner is an example.

Dieselpunk: Based on aesthetics and technology between World War I and World War II, sometimes up until the Cold War.

Decopunk: Ranges from the aesthetics of the 1920’s to the 1950’s. Decopunk aesthetic is heavily based on modernism. Less gritty than dieselpunk.

Elfpunk: Basically urban fantasy, but with common high or epic fantasy creatures put in an urban setting rather than vampires and werewolves.

Nanopunk: Similar to biopunk, but biotechnology is less available and nanotechnology is common.

Sandalpunk: Set in ancient worlds, such as Rome, but with advanced technology.

Splatterpunk: Extremely graphic and contains a lot of gore.

Steampunk: This genre gets its name from the heavy steam-powered technology involved. For starters, they help agents and publishers get an idea of what they’re in for if you’re going through the traditional publishing route.
Guide to Writing Steampunk

BASICS

Punk Genres: most common genres are in italics

Atomicpunk: Optimistic retro science fiction based on the Space Age. Think The Jetsons.

Biopunk: This genre is about altering genetics and DNA. These stories often take place in the near-future in which humans have been altered or in which human experimentation is common.

Candlepunk: Similar to clockpunk, but darker and with less technology.

Clockpunk: Think Da Vinci’s inventions, but more advanced while.

Aesthetics are based on the Victorian and industrial eras of the Western world, though other cultural elements may be used.

Western Steampunk: Similar to steampunk, but with Western (as in Wild West) aesthetics and settings.

So why are there so many sub genres? For starters, they help agents and publishers get an idea of what they’re in for if you’re going through the traditional publishing route. While bookstores usually just put these genres within science fiction or fantasy, you can still market your book through sub genres to reach a specific group of people who are looking for these genres.

However, there are a lot of sub genres, most of which many have not heard of. If you’ve written one of these genres and intend to publish it, the best would be to put it under another name (with the exception of steampunk, cyberpunk, and biopunk). For example, if you have written a candlepunk story, you can propose it as fantasy, alternate historical fiction, or any other genre it may fit in. While atomicpunk is quite common, it’s not well known by that name. If you have written an atompunk story, the best way to market it would be to call it retro science fiction.

But what’s the difference between punk genres and historical fiction? The technology is a big difference. It’s usually more advanced for the time it’s modeled after.

TECHNOLOGY

The technology is one of the defining aspects of steampunk. It’s the basis for the world you’re writing in. For the typical steampunk story, technology will be (of course) steam powered.

Scientists hope to hugely reduce the cost of wind energy by removing the blades from wind farms, instead taking advantage of a special phenomenon to cause the turbines to violently shake.

They do so as a result of the way that the wind is whipped up around them, using a phenomenon that architects avoid happening to buildings and encouraging it so that the sticks shake.
They do so using vortices, which is where the company gets its name from. The bladeless turbines use special magnets to ensure that the turbines are optimised to shake the most they can, whatever speed the wind is travelling at.
As the sticks vibrate, that movement is converted into electricity by an alternator.

Wiggling Poles of the Wasteland Harvest Electricity For Power Hungry Humans

These also look like they would cause fewer problems for birds and bats.

This is really cool.

They leave off the important note that when the wind rises, each pole makes a sound like a hundred vuvuzelas roaring at once. In the post-apocalyptic world of the future, villagers will speak in hushed tones about the Roaring Plains, and caution adventurous travelers to stay well away.

I appreciate how they essentially invented very useful yet alien-looking screaming pillars. Science continues to make some suspiciously sci-fi shit.

At least you won’t have to go outside to know how windy it is… You’ll hear it.

They provide us energy
They provide us warmth
They love us
These martyr gods, their twitching agony is our salvation

gadgets: EXPLOSIVE GEL @HISTORYORTHEBATMAN RAT "What's In That Utility Belt: A History of Batman Gadgets" - Explosive Gel: In August of 2009, Rocksteady Studios with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment developed the video game 'Batman: Arkham Asylum for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. The game was written by 'Batman: The Animated Series' Paul Dini , who created an entirely original plot within the Batman mythos. Wanting to have a central focus setting in the game to limit the Dark Knight's access to help within Gotham, 'Arkham Asylum' was visually inspired by stories such as Grant Morrison and Dave McKean's 1989 one shot graphic novel "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth". The voice cast included the original BTAS talents such as Kevin Conroy as Batman, Mark Hamill @HamillHimself as Joker and Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn. Batman has to fight his way through a Joker controlled Arkham Asylum to stop the detonation of hidden bombs throughout the city of Gotham. In gameplay, Batman's detective skills are enhanced with 'Detective Vision', able to examine objects and individuals providing contextual evidence, and his combat skills are brilliantly showcased with an array of running, kicking, jumping, climbing, and gliding, including dozens of lethal combos, providing a new look into Gotham's infamous insane asylum. Seen in this game and the following sequel and prequel chapters of Arkham City (2011), Arkham Origins (2013) and Arkham Knight (2015), many new gadgets were created to aid the Batman in gameplay, such as Explosive Gel. The Dark Knight would spray an amount of gelignite (in the shape of a crude Bat symbol) on a supposedly weak surface, then would detonate the destructive gel to explode. The Explosive Gel can be used to tear down a surface or used as a weapon against enemies; if henchmen are in the radius of a blast caused by the gadget, it would knock them out temporarily. The Explosive Gel was also an important part in taking down the Titan-enhanced Joker towards the end of "Batman: Arkham Asylum" chapter (clip presented). Even in this highly popular video game franchise, the Caped Crusader's arsenal continues to evolve with the 78 year old character. ✌🏼💙🦇🎮
