Speaking to Bryan Thompson, who pulled the prank on Sept. 14 and found himself at the center of a controversy over the school’s response, Collins’ sarcastic outrage seemed palpable. “School officials accused him of being disruptive and disrespectful,” Collins said. “Frankly, I don’t see what all the fuss is about.” He asked the student: “Why a banana? Why not a … grape?” “I don’t know,” Thompson replied. “Potassium is great.” Following the prank, Colonial Forge High School Principal Karen Spillman suspended Thompson for 10 days, and even recommended that he be kicked out of school for the entire year. Shortly thereafter, Thompson had composed his own rap song about the incident (called “Free Banana Man!”), set up a Facebook page dedicated to “Banana Man,” and someone even launched a petition calling for his suspension to be lifted. Thompson’s outrage at the punishment was shared by his fellow students, who began creating yellow t-shirts that read, “Free Banana Man!” So the school did what schools so often do when their authority is challenged: they banned the shirts, began confiscating them, and sent students to detention for supporting their classmate. This isn’t fire - you can’t fight sexism with more sexism. It’ll just create more problems down the road, kind of like what we have in the west now. Then again, India already has that problem considering the fact that when they tried to make their rape laws gender neutral, feminists fought successfully fought against it and so the status quo remains where it’s still not legally possible for a woman to rape a man.

And no, this isn’t me trying to claim “men are the most oppressed in the world”. There’s better solutions to societal problems than adding more inequality.

P.S. Did you like…just go through the notes looking for anyone who just reblogged it at all? If not, my bad memory strikes again but this is still sad.

This entire thing is stupid. This is one of the many reasons why we can’t move forward. Because there’s always that one person who does extreme shit like this and make a bad impression for everyone else. We don’t need pink seats, we don’t need to put men in blue seats in the back of a bus. We’re all equals here, which should mean all of the seats are open to anyone. This is seriously stupid.

Extreme: seats reserved for women to give them some modicum of protection from sexual assault and rape.

Not Extreme: sexual assault and rape.

Apparently.

In what universe are women equal in India?

Women in India are brutalized on public transport regularly, and there are several cases of gang rape that took place on buses that made worldwide news. This obviously isn’t addressing the structural problem of rape, but if it helps even one woman it’s worth it. Fuck those saying this is “sexist”. Maybe if those men didn’t rape then they wouldn’t have to have this.

That guy is a fucking idiot. Does he really think that separating men and women is sexism against men? WHY? HOW?

Women: Men have brutalized us for centuries and not even our public life is safe from violent rape and murder at their hands.

Bus Company: We’ll put a slight restriction on men to help you prevent that.

Men: That’s unfair! What about equality!

The POINT IS THIS IS GOING TO SOLVE ANYTHING

Youre a retard please get off tumblr

So segregating bus seats was a big problem when it was done under Jim Crow, but a “slight restriction” when Indian officials do it by gender to protect women.

Got it.

If the men really want to gang rape a woman to death how will pink bus seats stop that? What’s stopping these horrible rapist from just crossing other and grabbing her? “Oh no she’s in the pink seats we can’t rape her” like really? teach you bus driver’s to give a shit, put guards on the buses or give women better ways to defined themselves but how will pink seats really help?

That’s my thing^ like I get that rape is a serious problem on Indian busses but I’m not sure how pink seats are going to deter rapists

It’s to combat sexual assault which is a serious fucking problem on their public transport. Acting like this is anything like segragation is racist as hell.

A girl was literally raped to death om a bus in India and the men PULLED HER INSIDES OUT. But sitting in the back of the bus is oppression for these men I guess.

I don’t think @antifeminism-proegalitarian, @thatsyouthatshowdumbyousound, @truscum-grass, @the-defiant-pupil, @siryouarebeingmocked, and @matt-ruins-your-shit took the two seconds to realize this is in India and not the west.

But hey why does context matter when you can whine that men are the most oppressedest in the world because a company tries to do something, anything, to prevent the proliferation of violent rape in their country.

Uh yeah, actually at least I did, but hey why does knowing about anything before you speak about it matter when you can just make assumptions about a bunch of people so you yourself can whine and go off on a self-righteous little rant about strangers that’s not even accurate but just an overblown exaggeration?

Anyway, guess what, dude?

Because as far as I remember, I don’t believe I actually said anything either time I reblogged this post. If you did then that just adds a whole new level of sad to this.

I Understand Why Some Black People
Couldn't Care Less About Justine Damond

Good Morning America screenshot

I understand the frustration in Son of Baldwin's recent piece when he said the
following:
I'm going to say this and I mean-down to my subatomic particles-what I say.
And I actually don't care what anyone might think about it:
I don't give a FUCK about Justine Damond and what happened to her.
I don't give a fuck because most white people didn't give a fuck when police
murdered seven-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones as she lay on a couch, sleeping.
What most white people- and some black people- did was blame Aiyana's
family
I don't give a fuck because a black woman (or a Native woman) in the identical
situation Justine was in wouldn't garner support or sympathy from most white
people. No. What most white people would do is look for reasons that might
justify why the police officer "had" to kill the black woman.
Most white people rely on this idea that black people, in situations where white
people are in pain, are only ever to be soothing and understanding; only ever to
be Mammy or Uncle Remus; only ever to extend condolences; only ever to
embody loyalty; only ever to offer the empathy and sympathy that most white
people purposely and haughtily deny when the situation is reversed-almost as
if most white people still see us as their property.

So while there are some who want to criticize black folks for responding coldly
to Damond's death, I'd challenge them to indict the white supremacist society
that created the conditions for such reactions. When I hear people say, "Fuck
you, Justine Damond," I hear hurt and pain. If there is anything we can pull
out of this cold indifference, it is that white America must realize that its
coldness toward us in our most delicate moments can be directed right back at
them. When people say, "Fuck Justine Damond," I am certain they aren't
condemning her personally. I take it as them saying, "Fuck what Justine
Damond's death represents."

Bad, Beautiful, and Best Friend: I grew up in a household with a narc dad and a borderline mom who often left us for long periods of time to do god knows what. When I was 12 I learned that I had a half sister, who was 17 andliving in another town a few hours away. She had problems in her house too, although mainly economical problems, not actual neglect caused by il will We wrote letters to each other and in one letter I shared with her my fear of the long summer holiday. Being stuck in the house without even school to escape to was hell. She made a promise to come and save me if it got too bad "Just let me know and I'll find a way to help" she wrote A few days after I had posted my letter where I told her about how my mother had stopped providing meals, and my dad was emotionally and sometimes physically abusive, she showed up on our doorstep She told my dad that I was going to spend the summer holiday with her family and since my dad hated kids, myself included, he happily agreed, no questions asked We took the night train north, I was so excited. She didn't take me home with her - she took me camping. We spent the entire summer hiking amazingly beautiful trails, usually tenting but sometimes renting a small cabin for the night. It was the happiest summer of my life. I suddenly had a sister - who cared and enjoyed spending time with me. She could fish and trap birds, and cook and showed me how to read maps and the names of the constellations in the night sky When the summer ended I was transformed. I wasn't shy or confidence deprived anymore. I was a strong and resilient kid with an entirely new outlook on things I reported my parents for lacking parenting skills and I was placed with a foster family. Neither of them made a fuss to keep me, so it was easily done I often think about that summer, that changed my life so profoundly. I don't know if it was that I gained a sister, or that she showed me that I can survive - and thrive - even on the roughest, unmarked trails It wasn't until years later that I learned the real story behind that summer. At the time when she made me that promise, my sister lived with her family in a tiny apartment, with no place for yet another person or another mouth to feed In fact she had been told to get out herself as soon as possible, to make room for her siblings, and she was now awaiting the day when she could move into her student apartment. I was amazed to hear that not only was our wonderful summer an emergency solution, her way to keep her promise and also give me an unforgettable summer - but she did it so well that I never once realized that we were there because we had nowhere else to go Today I turn 30.
